Betting Odds Explained: Decimal, Chance and Margin
The Short Version
- Odds show the payout and imply a chance of winning.
- With decimal odds, stake times the number gives the total return.
- Implied probability is one divided by the odds.
- Bookmakers add a margin, so odds are never perfectly fair.
Odds look like a secret code until someone explains them, and then they become pleasantly simple. This page takes you through the most common format and the little sums that reveal what a price is really saying. We are the official BD333 partner site. Which format BD333's sportsbook shows is something to check on its own site, and we cannot confirm it. All the examples here are illustrations, not real prices.
Decimal odds in one minute
Decimal odds show the total return per unit staked, including your stake. At odds of 2.00, a ৳100 stake returns ৳200 if it wins, so your profit is ৳100. At 1.50, the same stake returns ৳150, a profit of ৳50. At 4.00 it returns ৳400, a profit of ৳300. Higher odds mean the bookmaker thinks the outcome is less likely.
Good to know: other formats exist, such as fractional, but they describe the same thing. Most online sportsbooks let you switch format in settings.
| Decimal odds | Stake | Total return | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | ৳100 | ৳150 | ৳50 |
| 2.00 | ৳100 | ৳200 | ৳100 |
| 4.00 | ৳100 | ৳400 | ৳300 |
Implied probability
Divide one by the odds to see the chance a price implies. At 2.00, one divided by two is 0.5, or fifty percent. At 4.00 it is twenty-five percent. At 1.50 it is about sixty-seven percent. This tells you what the bookmaker is saying about the likelihood.
If you believe the real chance is higher than the implied one, the bet has value in your opinion. But beware: feeling sure is not the same as being right. Opinions are cheap, and bookmakers employ analysts.
The margin
Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market, and you will get more than one hundred percent. The extra is the bookmaker's margin, a built-in edge. Take a coin-flip market priced at 1.90 on both sides: each implies about fifty-three percent, so the total is about one hundred and five percent. The five percent is the margin.
That is why, over time, betting costs money on average, even if you win some bets. Our article on bookmaker margin goes deeper, and the 1x2 betting article applies it to football.
Using odds wisely
Compare how odds are shown on the same match before betting. Avoid combining many selections to reach big odds, since each added pick multiplies the chance of failure. Keep stakes small, and never bet more because a price looks generous.

Good questions
What do decimal odds of 2.50 mean?
A stake returns two and a half times its size if it wins, including the stake. A ৳100 stake returns ৳250, a profit of ৳150.
Which odds format does BD333 use?
We could not confirm it. Look at the sportsbook or its settings.
What is implied probability?
It is one divided by the decimal odds. It shows the chance the price implies.
What is the bookmaker margin?
It is the built-in edge that makes the implied chances add up to more than one hundred percent.
Do high odds mean good value?
No. High odds mean a less likely outcome. Value depends on whether the true chance is higher than implied, which is hard to know.
